A ground-up group of activists and active citizens developed an in-depth report (i.e. a white paper) identifying key concerns of activists and local groups working on gender and sex issues in Singapore. This independent citizen’s research initiative was launched in response to the Singapore government’s “Conversations on Women Development”, a national-level effort kickstarted in 2020 to identify and tackle issues affecting women in Singapore. From 2021-2022, Yip and Ethel organised a series of focused group discussions with 14 activists and 7 local advocacy groups. A working group was formed thereafter to condense the insights from the FGDs into a comprehensive white paper. The paper highlighted 6 thematic issues faced by local community groups, especially drawing attention to marginal issues or identities that might require greater attention, and detailed 4 key actionables for moving forward in the field of gender equity in Singapore.

Subsequently, the workgroup also organised and facilitated a “workshop” that engaged activists and local groups in direct discussion of the paper’s results, and identify limitations of the study. The workgroup also shared our findings with representatives of the Prime Minister’s Office.
